چکیده
OBJECTIVE To chronicle the conservative treatment and management of an osteoporotic patient presenting with acute back pain resulting from a lumbar compression fracture. CLINICAL FEATURES A 74-year old male presented with acute back pain in the thoracolumbar region after an episode of lifting. Radiographic evaluation revealed generalized demineralization and a moderate wedge compression fracture at L1. INTERVENTION AND OUTCOME The conservative treatment approach included postural education, activity modification, interferential current, taping into extension, Graston Technique(®), and rehabilitative exercise prescription. Outcome measures included verbal pain rating scale, medication use, and a return to activities of daily living (ADLs). The patient attained long-term symptom resolution with no recurrence of pain at 12 month follow-up. SUMMARY A combination of conservative rehabilitation strategies may be successfully implemented to treat osteoporotic patients with mild to moderate osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture of the lumbar spine.

An Unusual Case of a Large Hematorrachis Associated with Multi-Level Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression Fractures; a Case Report
Spinal epidural haemorrhage may present as back pain associated with radicular symptoms and can be a catastrophic clinical scenario with progression to paraplegia or even sudden death. Being a rare entity, it needs a high index ofclinical suspicion to diagnose it. Fractures have been documented as a cause of hematorrachis but such hematomas only extend to one or two vertebral segments. Large ep...
متن کاملOsteoporotic Lumbar Compression Fracture in Patient with Ankylosing Spondylitis Treated with Kyphoplasty
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is an inflammatory disease primarily affecting the spine. Osteoporosis can be a complication of AS and associated with low bone mineral density. As well, spinal fractures in the AS are usually unstable and may cause neurologic deficit at the mainly cervical region with low energy trauma. However, reports of lumbar compression fracture in AS are very rare. Thus, we re...

Vertebral augmentation is a minimally invasive but sometimes technically challenging intervention typically reserved for the treatment of older patients with painful vertebral compression fractures due to osteoporosis or neoplasms. We report the successful treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures of the first lumbar vertebral body (L1) using kyphoplasty in a paraplegic young pa...

Calcification of intervertebral disc (IVD) is an uncommon but well-defined clinical syndrome in children. Despite its benign nature, occasionally, calcified nucleus pulposus can herniate into the spinal canal. We report an interesting case of calcified disc herniation in the thoracic spine. Although it resulted in cord compression and syrinx formation, it well responded to conservative manageme...

It has been reported that fractures are more common in epileptic patients relative to the general population. Seizures by repeated muscular contractions can increase fracture risk throughout the skeleton, but the reported papers about non traumatic vertebral fractures following a single episode of seizure are rare and mostly located in thoracic spine with only one or two vertebral fr...
